A Look Into My Head
How did this crazy idea come into play?
I've been mulling over for the past couple of years exactly what kind of doctor I'm aiming for. However, ever since I was exposed to the emergency room back in 10th grade, I knew I had to do something related to it. What exactly did I come up with? Trauma surgeon. So, after looking into emergency rooms, I found out about different trauma systems and became more interested. Then it hit me, this was what I also wanted to do for my senior project. It continued to work around in my head and I finally sat down and thought about it.
It was at breakfast with my parents that I had the crazy idea of taking the opportunity of going to Korea. I proposed it and was completely shut down. So, I knew I had to come up with something to convince them. Ambition took it from there.
I personally reached out to Dr. Rhee a couple of weeks into the school year and was delighted to be able to interview him. He provided me with a much clearer understanding of the different systems and how schooling work. In the end, he sent me off with a signed copy of his book as well as a contact in Asan Medical Center. My parents started to warm up to the idea of sending me off to Korea and the rest is history. (Very clichéd)
So, what is a senior research project (SRP)?
An opportunity to go out and explore our interests in the world through research.
What's your senior research project?
The plan is to compare the trauma systems between Korea and Tucson. Not to see which one is better, but to show the importance of trauma systems.
What do you hope to accomplish?
I hope to provide a better insight on how trauma systems work. But more importantly, I hope to spread the knowledge and encourage people to fund more research into the field.

Now, where will you be heading to?
I'll be shadowing Dr. Steve Pike in St. Joseph's hospital and talking to doctors in the University Medical Center when I'm in Tucson. When I head to Korea, I'll be staying with Dr. Hong Suk-Kyung in Asan Medical Center located in Songpa-gu, Seoul, Korea.
